Honouring Women’s Rights and Strength in Uncertain Times

In the past year, dramatic changes to women’s rights have been triggering. The right-wing rollout that’s been unfolding thus far has occurred predominantly to Canada’s neighbours down south. However, internationally, there have also been movements and other countries touched by these implemented choices. The unravelling of women-led initiatives, longstanding laws,  diversity, equity and inclusion affect everyone. In the words of Sojourner Truth, these men seem confused and truly have no idea what they’re doing. Not only do their choices influence those mentioned, but the groups who have been particularly affected by these amendments are marginalized and trauma-impacted communities.

With many years of political exclusion and systemic disadvantages, marginalized communities have learned to lean into the radical movement of joy and healing as a form of resistance. Affirming emotions alongside healing, sets a compassionate and empowering tone, emphasizing the importance of celebration and restorative health.

The ripple effect of reproductive rights rollbacks, gender-based violence protections and workplace discrimination reverberates everywhere. These political actions and abuse of power have left many with collective trauma. 

The result of political shifts and societal perspectives can impact on a psychological level. New eras of the erasure of gender-based protections and rights can open doors to feelings of helplessness, fear and anger. But together, women are far from helpless. It’s important to be receptive and understand these normal responses. The only way to process the loss and grief is to normalize the response. Feel it. Understand that receiving and managing emotional responses is also an act of resistance. On the other side of that is change. As Truth said, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again!”

Let’s support Women’s Rights

Everything will affect everyone in its way. However, for many, it will take a toll. Marginalized groups should find ways to encourage mental health care to carry them through. Here are a few ways to celebrate yourself and find solace during these taxing times.

  • Encourage self-care as a revolutionary act in the face of oppression

Contrary to popular belief, self-care is not selfish. Not only this but it’s also said to be revolutionary. If not you, then who? Self-care can save lives, especially during these perilous times. Oppression is still very much alive as the fight continues for systemic change. To help navigate our emotions, truly taking care of oneself is an act that will carry everyone through their mental health journey. 

  • Engage in advocacy without retraumatization

Retraumatization occurs when someone re-experiences a previously traumatic event. Because advocacy can take a toll emotionally and spiritually, one can easily slip back into a space that can cause a distressing outcome. To avoid this, consider a few things such as: identifying potential triggers to set boundaries. If the news is too much, turn it off. Be transparent, and prioritize what makes you comfortable. Find like-minded support groups and communities. Assess situations before taking part. Ensure it’s both a space you can maneuver in and fight for while shielding yourself from a harrowing outcome.    

  • Promote both systemic change and personal well-being 
    Systemic change and personal well-being lean on each other to exist. We must be the change to see the change. Meaningful systemic change starts from within. Once both come together positively, integrating them into societal perspectives is crucial. Support women-led initiatives that reinforce your beliefs. Mentor in spaces that advocate similar viewpoints and give a voice to grassroots activism rooted in human rights and social justice.   

The balance of celebration and struggle 

For decades, marginalized communities have fought for their rights in oppressive countries to usher in equality and justice. In these complex political times, the fight continues with some government actions revisiting devastating laws, discrimination and hostilities from the past. 

Right now, self-compassion, deep reflection and action are needed to move forward. Everyone’s strength will be tested. During times like these, celebration is the counterpoint. Again this touches upon joy and healing as a form of resistance to reclaim space. Uplift, empower and advocate. Truth said, “You need not be afraid to give us our rights, for fear we will take too much…” As history has shown, women will rightfully continue to fight for their rights. While the focus on self-care and celebration will surely not be far behind.
